A song written by the UK-based R&B singer, Ady Suleiman, and performed by Derek Deon & the Vaughns.
The first time I ever heard this song, it was being performed by a few friends of mine; Jordan Carpenter, Mason Esquivel, and Dylan James Vaughn, in a group formerly known as "The Downtown" . So really, it's a cover of a cover song.
The Downtown would occasionally come and play house shows at a place that John Johns and I lived in, and "Say So" was always a highlight of their set. This was in 2015, before the Ady's current, official version of was released. Jordan was a big fan of the early demo and acoustic performance video, and I always loved the way he and the Downtown played it in a live arrangement. It would get stuck in my head and, even after the release of Ady's official version of the track, I would imagine it the way the Downtown used to play it in my living room, or at an open mic.
After the Downtown stopped playing shows and Dylan and I started playing together, we went started process of writing our first set-list
by asking the question: "what songs do we both know"? Say So was on that list of songs, and was always I fun tune to play and improvise on. When we got the idea to do a live session to capture a taste of the band's sound, it felt like a good chance to record the version of Say So that made me fall in love with the song in the first place.
lyrics
Lyrics:
I see you soon as I come through
First thing I think when I walk in that room
Is fuck this girl's so beautiful
I wonder if you'll look back at me too
You never do
I wanna tell you why you should come over for the night
Cuz when I catch your eye I get this feeling from inside it's like
This just ain't right
You she will not like I
Wish I could decide
I wonder should I say so
I want to but I never know how to
I'll try again tomorrow
I hope that one day I do tell
I wonder should I
I wonder should I say so
On my mind
Always on my mind
And I don't even know your name or what you like
Still I wanna hold you like you're mine
Cuz I know if I don't tell you exactly how I'm feeling
I'll regret, so I must try share a breath
Need to find my confidence but I don't have it at the moment
Where'd it go
I'm only like this when I see you
I wonder should I say so
I want to but I never know how to
I'll try again tomorrow
I hope that one day I do tell
I wonder should I
I wonder should I say so
